Our Responsible Tourism Statement

Enviro BronzeWelcome to Makoura Lodge, New Zealand’s best kept secret at the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges. Unspoilt and 100% pure is what we promote and what we want to preserve.

We encompass a clean, green approach wherever we can, ensuring that your children and grandchildren can visit and enjoy the same magic.

Makoura Lodge is reducing our energy consumption by utilizing energy-efficient light bulbs throughout the units and the lodge itself. We are also in the process of installing energy-efficient ‘econo-heat’ panel heaters in the accommodation units, which use convection technology to heat the rooms. You can help us conserve energy by switching off lights and appliances when not in use.

Recycling facilities are available at the back of the lodge. We recycle all glass, plastic, and paper, as well as food scraps (which are fed to local livestock or composted). If you would like us to recycle any of your rubbish during or after your stay, we are more than happy to. Simply separate recyclable rubbish from other waste. Our nearest recycling facilities are in Kimbolton, and we do a trip once a week. We have been pushing for a local facility here in Apiti, and are hopeful that we can achieve this in the near future.

Water is a precious resource here at Makoura Lodge, especially during the summer months. You can help reduce our water consumption and wastage by re-using your towels by hanging them on the rail. Should you need a fresh towel, please do not hesitate to contact us at the lodge, and we’d be happy to supply you with one.

We also use environmentally friendly cleaners throughout the lodge, which are non-toxic, and completely biodegradable.  You are also supplied you with vegetable-based soap and hair products that are biodegradable, made from GE Free ingredients, are free from petrochemical andanimal by-products and are produced locally, not imported from half a world away.

Makoura Lodge has a long-term goal to regenerate native bush on our land, which also involves the wider community. We are actively replanting native plant species in retired areas around the lodge, and managing their repopulation. We also maintain our property in a sensitive way that ensures that we are not polluting streams or rivers. Please take time to enjoy our stunning views and do not hesitate to ask about our walks and activities.

If you would like to know more about our commitment to socially responsible tourism, and maintaining New Zealand’s 100% pure image, please ask us at the lodge.
